  • Genetic evaluation using test-day records
    Kovač, Milena, 1957- ...
The paper discusses different methods for genetic evaluation of test-day records in dairy species. It gives an overview of the experience with test-day (TD) models in Slovenian goats, sheep, and ... cattle. In small ruminants, TD models allow an early prediction of breeding values before mating season, thus shortening generation interval for one year, and provide a management tool to cull animals with low future production ability. The same applies to cattle although to a lesser extent. In addition, the models allow to adjust individual records for different environments whenever the animal is moved. Because of small herd/flock sizes, it was useful to include common herd/flock effects as random, especially in sheep where the interaction with specific test-day environment accounts more than 50 % of variation. Deficiencies of the purposed model were the lack of adjustment for variance changes over time, and to some extent, for differences in shape of lactation curves between environmental and genetic components.
