    The pregnancy of a drug dependent woman is at high risk for medical complications such as infections, anemia, poor nutritional status, overdose, and psychiatric disorders. Fetal wastage is common as ... well as intrauterine growth retardation, infections, and premature labor. An infant born to a drug dependent mother not in treatment has a high incidence of prematurity with concomittant complications such as infections and the potential of future developmental problems. Neonatal abstinence syndrome occurs in more than half of m utero narcotic exposed infants. Special treatment resources are needed toimprove outcomes for the mother and child.
