  • Comparison of passive and electrical stimulation training of atrophied spastic muscle
    Bajd, Tadej ...
The effects of passive joint ranging and electrical stimulation on the maxial force exerted by stimulated centrally denervated muscles were compared. Ankle joint plantar flexors were studied in four ... complete spinal cord injured patients. One extremity was treated passively by the help of electrohydraulic machine while plantar flexors were stimulated on the other lower extremity for half an hour per day. The ankle joint of the first leg was passively ranged from maxial dorsal to maxial plantar flexion with the frequency of 0.1 Hz. Cyclical electrical stimulation (4s on/4s off) was applied to the plantar flexors of the contralateral extremity. The ankle joint torque produced by electrically stimulated plantar flexors was measured every week. It was found that passive ranging of the joint has similar effect on muscle restrengthening as electrical stimulation training.
