  • Mayorʹs Lamp from Colatio
    Djura Jelenko, Saša
An early antiquity cemetery dating back to the 1st and 2nd century AD was unearthed at the southern necropolis of the Roman settlement Colatio/Stari trg near Slovenj Gradec before World War I. Among ... all discovered graves, two tombs situated within walled burial plots stood out due to their location and size. Rich fnds ofer basis for the assumption that a male member of the neighbouring municipium Celeiaʹs upper class and two female individuals were buried in the early imperial tomb I in the second half of the 1st century AD. Te manner of the tombʹs construction, Italic imported items (funerary bed, two glass cups and two balsamaria, oil lamp, amphora) point to Romanised traditions of the tombʹs owner, which is also confrmed by fnds from other graves in the western part of the cemetery (DJURA JELENKO, S., S. GROH 2006, 417, note 51). On the other hand, an evident Norican-Celtic component is present in tomb I. It is refected in Norican-Pannonian female garb, now unfortunately lost ceramic vessels, and the andiron or grill with an ending shaped as a stylised cattle head with horns. Luxurious fnds from tomb I indicate the provinceʹs importance, resulting from its rich mineral resources that set a foundation for the formation of an indigenous upper class. Tey also testify to urban aristocracyʹs frm rootedness in the countryside. Translation: Saša Radusinović
