  • Residual stress variations due to strain hardening effect after laser shock peening [Elektronski vir]
    Trdan, Uroš ; Hill, M. R. ; Grum, Janez, 1946-
Laser shock peening with protective coating is an innovative fast emerging technique for introducing desirable compressive residual stresses in machine components in order to increase fatigue ... resistance. In the present paper laser peening has been applied to a precipitation-hardened aluminium alloy AlSi1MgMn. Specimens were treated using Nd:YLF laser with two power densities of 2 and 4 GW/cm2 and a uniform pulse duration of 18 ns. Laser peened region was fully investigated with regard to residual stress and microhardness profile. Laser shock peening turned out to be very efficient technique to improve surface properties. On the basis of the micro plastic deformation induced by shock waves due to the plasma effect increased compressive residual stresses and microhardness were achieved. With the lower power density microhardness increased by 16.3 % and with the higher power density of 4 GW/cm2 it increased by as much as 23.9 %, which improves fatigue strength of the material under dynamic loading.
