    Glucocorticoids have many therapeutic uses, including treatment of selected infectious diseases or their complications. When used for infectious diseases,the situation is usually such that an ... overactive immune response contributes to the pathology of the infection rather than contains it. On the other hand, a wide variety of complications can result from steroid use: decreasing of host defenses, masking of the severity of infection and predisposing for secondary infection. Because of these potential complications, the risk-benefit ratio of glucocorticoids in the treatment of infections must be weighed carefully Recommendations are given for the systemic use of glucocorticoids in the treatment of certain infections in adults.
