  • Collocations in a bilingual technical dictionary for encoding

    Technical dictionaries are often compiled as simple glossaries which only lemmatize technical terms of a pair of languages, without presenting any additional information on the use of terms in ... context. Such, at least, is the situation in Slovene specialized lexicography. Whilst glossaries for specialized fields are quite abundant in the Slovene market, there are only two specialized dictionaries that include collocations of terms. This article focuses on the importance of collocations and language patterns in a technical dictionary for encoding and on the justification of their inclusion in dictionary articles. The case study of the prospective Slovene-English garment dictionary is presented. Garment terms and the collocations they form are highlighted from a contrastive perspective. They are followed by examples of possible dictionary articles intended to be included in the future dictionary.
