    In this research, effects of different parameters of innovative surface treatment, i.e. Laser Shock Peening (LSP) on precipitation hardened aluminium alloy AA6082-T651 was investigated in a great ... deal. The first portion of the study assesses the characterization of LSP effect on surface integrity by means of optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS). The LSP effect on three-dimensional (3D) surface topography due to plasma and shock waves, was investigated by confocal high-resolution microscope, with applied response surface methodology (RSM). Furthermore, microstructural evaluation on transmission electron microscope (TEM) confirmed high density of dislocations and ultra-fine structure, which reflects in increased micro-hardness and compressive residual stress in the near surface layer. In the second portion of the study, the effect of different LSP parameters on corrosion behaviour in 0.6M NaCl solution was investigated. Results confirmed beneficial effect of LSP with improved corrosion resistance in a great deal with enhanced region of passivity, improved repassivation and corrosion current reduction by as much as factor 30, with crystallographic and hemispherical pitting reduction after LSP. AES and XPS analysis indicated thicker and chemically more stable passive/oxide film Al2O3 , which contributed to higher corrosion resistance. The final portion of the study, i.e. in-situ monitoring of acoustic emission AE during short-term potenciostatic tests confirmed good correlation of AE activity and current density. Analysis of AE bursts confirmed three most emissive sources during corrosion experiments; i.e. film rapture, pitting propagation and hydrogen evolution as the most emissive AE source.
