  • Photocatalytic activity of exterior wall coatings
    Sever Škapin, Andrijana ...
External walls (façades) of buildings are continuously exposed to microbes andvarious forms of dirt. The deposited matter may cause loss of-template- appearance and various deteriorating effects, ... such as faster ageing, degradation and, finally, loss of functionality. For this reason, we have developed and characterised efficient self-cleaning coatings with photo-catalytic behaviour. As photocatalytic active material, we have chosen nanosized anatase, which under the influence of UV light causes destruction oforganic dirt into CO2 and water. Among the three binders tested, the silicone binding system has gained the most appropriate characteristics. For determination of the activity of developed photo-catalytic coatings, three different methods have been used: (a) discoloration of an organic pigment, which was chosen on the basis of appropriate UV stability in the absence and presence of photoactive anatase in combination with chalking test (b) monitoring of degradation of model organic pollutants in gas-solid system by FTIR and (c) monitoring of degradation of methylene blue solution in liquid-solid system by UV-VIS.
