    Nowadays more and more high technology devices can be found in every household. Some companies already produce intelligent home devices, which improve peoplećs lives by making them more luxurious, ... easier or safer. This paper presents a prototype of an electronic system for remote surveillance and multimedia messaging which could become the centre of family life by implementing personal text and audio-video messages and by enabling remote access. The system is built on low cost hardware and free, open source software to minimize the systemćs costs, which makes the system accessible to large population. The paper explains the architecture and functionality of the system. Three main functions are implemented: local home surveillance and controlling extern devices, personalisation and multimedia messaging, and remote home surveillance. At this point the paper does not cover the safety issues that arrive with the Internet connectivity.
