    National guidelines are defined as systematically developed broad statements of good clinical practice. Guidelines are focused on specific aspects of preventing hospital-acquired infections, ... including standard principles that need to be routinely incorporated into clinical practice. The ultimate decision about a particular procedure or treatment will always depend on each individual patient' s condition and risk factors, circumstances and wishes, and the clinical judgement of the health care team. One of the main advantagesof guidelines applied locally as recommendations is that they can contribute to better treatment outcomes, but local ownership of the implementation process is crucial for the success in changing the existing clinical practice. This, however is the responsibility of each medical practitioner: Slovenian national guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections were developed by a multidisciplinary working group appointed by the Ministry of Health. Medical directors and hospital infection committee representatives of Slovenian hospitals were participating in the group to discuss and comment the draft guidelines in January 2001.
