    Quantitative measurement of viral load has became an integral part of the clinical management of patients suffering from hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Assays involving both target and signal ... amplification, such as polymerase chain reaction, hybrid capture system and branched chain signal amplification are now commercially available for accurate, precise and reproducible quantification of viral burden in both hepatitis B and C infected patients. Besides providing prognostic information on individual patients, the most important role of viral load tests is monitoring of the patient's response to antiviral treatment. Several studies have also shown the value of viral load determination as a surrogate marker for clinical markers of therapeutic success. Furthermore, the detection of HBV DNA is useful in resolving diagnostic uncertainties following serological testing for markers of HBV infection that are caused by HBV genetic variations.
