    The role of the poet was subjected to changes in terms of theoretical guidelines and social circumstances in the 20th century. The paper through the analysis of the self-understanding of Slovenian ... modernist poet Dane Zajc in his poetry and metatextual discourse (essays, interviews etc.) reveals a response to these changes. An analysis of metatexts presents the role of the poet in the current Slovenian society and in the context of modernist aesthetics. The focus of the paper through Zajc’s metapoetic poems explores, how self-reflexivity of the role of a poet and a poetic creation within the poetic discourse is expressed. Metatexts reveal Zajc’s active social role, but at the same time his defence of socially non-committed poetry. The poet’s commitment to the autonomy of poetic expression is confirmed through metapoetry, in which the image of the language has the central semantic role.
