  • Numerical analysis of operational performance of POM/PA6 polymer S-type spur gears and analysis of influence of the production process
    Černe, Borut, 1989- ; Duhovnik, Jože, 1948-
A comparative numerical analysis approach is used in the presented paper, aimed at the investigation of the operational performance of polymer S-gears as compared to more typical involute spur gears. ... The analyses are performed using the FEM (finite element method), which is implemented through ANSYS commercial software, where a full gear meshing cycle for four different spur gear geometries is examined. A POM/PA6 combination of materials is considered for the gear pair, where the driver gear is made from POM (Polyoximethylene or acetal) and the follower gear from PA6 (Nylon). Furthermore the influence of the production process of polymer gears is taken into consideration by applying an injection molding simulation for both materials and all four gear geometries. The aim of the simulation is analyzing how the gear geometry deforms (shrinks) during the cooling of the molded gear, if no measures are taken in advance to reduce the shrinkage effects. Commercial software Autodesk Moldflow was used to perform the task. By implementing the deformed gear geometries in a repeated FEM analysis of the gear meshing cycle it is then possible to observe how the different gear types perform if the center distance is not recalibrated relatively to the molding shrinkage and initial settings are kept.
