  • Zdravstveno stanje zob in parodoncija ter razjeda dvanajstnika = Health status of soft and hard oral tissues in patients with duodenal ulcer
Grošelj, Dušan ; Ferkolj, Ivan ; Seme, Katja, 1966-
Helicobacter pylori is a pathogenic bacterium which plays an important role ingastritis, peptic ulcer, MALT lymphoma and possibly in gastric cancer. The mode of transmission and sour ce of infection ... with H. pylori are still unclear. Recently, dental plaque and saliva have been implicated as possible sources of the organism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of soft and hard oral tissues in patients with endoscopic evidence of duodenal ulcer before starting antibiotic therapy for eradication of the pathogen. The results showed that the patients with duodenal ulcer had on average slightly more decayed and filled teeth but the same number of missing teeth, compared with a group of subjects of equal age without evidence of peptic disease. The patients' periodontal status was comparable to that of 45-year-old subjects examined in an epidemiological survey. In specimens of subgingival plaque obtained from the patients, motile rods and spirochetes represented nearly 60%of the flora, whereas cocci accounted for less than 24%. With proper oral hygiene, the reservoir of H. pylori in the oral cavity, from which the recolonisation of upper gastrointestinal tract mucosa may take place, can be decreased or even eliminated.
