  • Kompaktni diski v lokalni mreži na Inštitutu za biomedicinsko informatiko Medicinske fakultete = CD-ROM networking at the Institute for biomedical informatics of the Medical faculty
Hristovski, Dimitar, 1964- ; Rožić, Anamarija
CD-ROMs have recently gained a lot of popularity as a medium for storage of large databases. At first they were single-user devices which poses some limitations in multi-user environments. By ... connecting CD-ROMs in a LAN, most of the limitations can be overcome: a user from his workstation can use many CD-ROMs that are located on different servers; the CDROMs can be used by many users at the same time; the results from database searches can be printed on a shared printer. The article describes the case of connecting CD-R OMs in a LAN at IBMI MF, where several bibliographic databases can be accessed across the LAN. A description of the necessary networking equipment is given, including: CD-ROMs, CDROM Players, network servers, workstations, network operating system and network interfnce cards. Some software was developed in-house, to make the use of networked CD-ROMs easier and to select the bibliographic sources, which are available at the Central Medical Library, Ljubljana. The selection of CD-ROM titles was guided by the interests and needs of our users, most of whom are from the Medical Faculty and the University Clinical Centre. We organise handr-on coursesfor our users covering the usage of CD-ROM dntabases available on the network As a result of CD-ROM networking at IBMI MF the number of endusers and the work flexibility increased, at the price of longer access time.
