    Legionellaceae are gram-negative, aerobic bacilli. Legionellae can multiply intap water at temperatures as high as 43 degrees C and survive even higher temperatures. Inhalation of contaminated ... aerosol can cause legionellosis. Two distinct clinical syndromes have been associated with infection by Legionella species. Pontiac fever is nonpneumonic flu-like illness of short duration. Legionnaire's disease is severe form of pneumonia in most cases with acute onset and complex clinical picture. The infection is accompanied by extrapulmonary symptoms such as gastrointestinal complaints and symptoms referable to the central nervous system, including headache and confusion out of proportion to the degree of fever. Predisposing factors for Legionnaire's disease are: cigarette smoking, alcoholism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease. The cases are diagnosed by culture, by seroconversion or by urinary antigen detection.
