  • Risk factors for the repetition of suicidal behaviour: a 5-year follow-up study

    This study aimed at determining the risk factors for repeated suicidal behaviour and describing the effect of psychiatric characteristics and treatment on repetition of suicidal behaviour by means of ... a 5-year follow-up study. Among the 1017 attempters who were admitted to the hospital between 1990 and 1993, 359 were interviewed at home after 5 years. The interviews revealed non-fatal repetition during follow-up by 104 patients (29%). Multivariate analysis, controlling for age, gender, psychiatric axis I and II diagnosis and methods of attempts, showed a significantly elevated risk for long-term pharmacological treatment during follow-up. Psychotherapeutic treatment was found to reduce the risk for repetition of suicidal behaviour.
