  • Person-oriented mobile information system enhancing engineering communication in construction processes

    Uncertainties and the dynamic nature of on-site activities require complex coordination of information, resources and tasks. For effective problem solving, the immediate availability of information ... and a prompt response of project participants on various levels of project organization are crucial. This chapter discusses a way to achieve effective communication in construction processes. The proposed approach is focused on people and effective linking of their knowledge, experience and capability. Therefore, the designed mobile computing extended information system will provide sophisticated personal context-aware assistance. Two case studies and a social network analysis were used to validate the approach. The results showed that a person-oriented approach with adequate seamless ITC support can change and increase the traditional information flow and decrease information overload simultaneously. On the other hand, success of the system implementation depends heavily on active participation of key project team members; if primary information distributors refuse participation, the system quickly loses effectiveness.
