  • Observing phase transitions with Schlieren imaging
    Robek, Aljaž ...
Schlieren photography is a mechanically non-intrusive optical method of visualizing different densities of a transparent media, which are represented by means of different color intensities (black ... and white technique) or different colors (color technique) due to changes in refractive index. Our first aim was to determine, if such method could be used to observe liquid-vapor phase-change processes. This was tested on three physical phenomena: vaporization of liquid nitrogen droplets on a platform and in mid-air at room temperature and boiling of ethanol-water solution. Our second aim was to investigate usefulness of Schlieren method to determine changes in composition of a nucleating bubble during boiling a water-ethanol solution. This paper presents the Schlieren method, experimental setup, and analysis of recorded images.
