  • Advertisements, consciousness raising and the classroom
    Križan, Agata
In every interaction, many interpersonal relations and meanings are established. Playing an important role in language acts, the teaching of interpersonal meanings is therefore stressed in the ... language classroom since with the knowledge and awareness of these meanings, linguistic communicative competence develops as a major component of the modern communicative approach to language teaching. When learning a foreign language, it is generally known that at the beginning, feelings of frustration can be present because of the inability to express oneself clearly and precisely in terms of showing solidarity or power, expressing views and attitudes, persuading or uncovering own personalities. These expressions constitute a visible and important part of communication. The English language offers many linguistic sources for the creation of interpersonal meanings in written or spoken interaction. When an opportunity to explore these linguistic sources, which help in the process of fulfillment of the interpersonal function of a targeted language in authentic texts, is given, a pupil will become aware of them and will use them more effectively and without difficulty in speech and writing. With this awareness and, consequently, through the ability to use various linguistic sources which realize interpersonal meanings, full and effective participation in the interaction is made possible. The language of advertising can be an excellent teaching resource for the exploration of interpersonal meanings. This paper highlights some tasks which focus on the consciousnessraising (C-R) of interpersonal meanings in a classroom at the intermediate level. With an awareness of interpersonal sources through the analysis of advertising language, a pupil can gain insight into what these sources reveal about the power, status and personal engagement of the people who participate in the interaction. The interpersonal grammar which a writer/speaker chooses in interaction is motivated by the tenor of a direct context of situation. When a pupil gains insight into the tenor of a text, he/she learns the different usages of language. The tasks which the present paper considers are divided within the concepts of the kind of exchange that is given, of the relationships between the participants and their discourse roles, of the assessment of the writer about the validity or truth of the statement, and of the attitudes, values, and judgements that are expressed. The meaning of consciousness-raising is first of all the development of receptive skills and not so much the development of productive skills. This means that the paper deals only with some possible tasks for raising awareness of interpersonal meanings which are not expected to be produced immediately but primarily to be recognized and noticed.
