  • Cultural awareness in future teachers [Elektronski vir]
    Hempkin, Kirsten
Regardless of the particular field of professional English we teach in, if we wish our learners to communicate effectively it is essential that we foster inthem some level of cultural knowledge or ... awareness. It could be argued that this is particularly true of learners at Filozofska Fakulteta in Maribor, manyof whom will go on to become teachers themselves. Not only do we expect that they will use English proficiently, we also expect that they will be ableto guide their own students to becoming culturally aware. As we prepare for the implementation of the Bologna programme, language development classes have been restructured and the way in which we approach the teaching of cultural awareness in those classes has also inevitably come under review. In order to explore this issue with our students, I carried out a classroom studyin the form of a questionnaire. The purpose of the study was two-fold: totest existing knowledge of cultural awareness and to explore the views of the students on the links between language and culture and what cultural knowledge they feel they need as learners and future teachers. In this paper, I will present the results of the questionnaire and discuss the implications of those results for our language development classes.
