  • Mathematics anxiety among primary school pupils
    Lutovac, Sonja
Mathematics anxiety is commonly defined as a feeling of tension, apprehension or fear concerning the manipulation of numbers and the completion of mathematical problems in various contexts. Although ... the causes of math anxiety are undetermined, some teaching styles are implicated as risk factors. Math-anxious individuals exhibit physiological arousal and have faulty beliefs about their math abilities. However, the most pervasive tendency is avoidance. Highly math anxious individuals have a strong tendency to avoid math and enrol in fewer math courses. This ultimately undercuts their math competence and forecloses important career paths. Most previous studies of mathematics anxiety have focused on high school students or adults, while mathematics may also provoke strong and adverse reactions in children. Age 9 to 11 seems to be a critical stage for the development of attitudes and emotional reactions towards mathematics. Once formed, anxiety is difficult to change. The present study examined math anxiety among primary school pupils. A total of 292 pupils grades 4, 6, and 8 porticipated. Sixth grade pupils were found to experience higher math anxiety than other age groups. In addition, significant differences were found according to school performance, attitudes toward mathematics and pupils' self-concept in mathematics. Different types of math anxiety were discovered.
