  • Chondrosarcomas of the head and neck
    Coca-Pelaz, Andrés ...
Chondrosarcoma represents approximately11 % of all primary malignant bone tumors. It is the secondmost common sarcoma arising in bone after osteosarcoma.Chondrosarcomas of the head and neck are rare ... and mayinvolve the sinonasal tract, jaws, larynx or skull base.Depending on the anatomical location, the tumor canproduce a variety of symptoms. Computed tomography andmagnetic resonance imaging are the preferred imagingmodalities. The histology of conventional chondrosarcomais relatively straightforward; major challenges are the distinctionbetween grade I chondrosarcomas and chondromas, and the differential diagnosis with chondroblasticosteosarcoma and chondroid chordoma. Surgery alone orfollowed by adjuvant radiotherapy is the treatment ofchoice. Radiotherapy alone has also been reported to beeffective and can be considered if mutilating radical surgeryis the only curative alternative. The 5-year survival forchondrosarcoma reaches 80 %; distant metastases and/orlocal recurrences significantly worsen prognosis. Thepresent review aims to summarize the current state ofinformation about the biology, diagnosis and managementof these rare tumors.
