  • Animal subjective experience of emotion : a case study involving inter-observer reliability in assessing pig's style of interaction using repertory grid technique
    Grajfoner, Daša
Emotion has had a changeable status throughout the history of science. Nevertheless it has always been intrinsic to subjective experience and welfare of animals. The dualistic and materialistic ... theoretical frames of contemporary science either deny subjective experience to animals or label it inaccessible to direct objective observation by giving it fundamental independence of the outward expression. In research so far, fragmented, indirect biological indicators have been used to assess animal welfare and to infer how animals feel. A phenomenological way of thinking, on the other hand, emphasizes the animal's point of view and its manifestation through quality of behaviour. The major implication is transfer of subjective experience from an exclusively private form of introspection to publicly accessible phenomena directly expressed in the subject's way of relating to, or interacting with, the social and physical environment. Animals are defined as active agents, and their emotion as an aspect of subjectivity - a situated corporeal attitude, manifested in everything they do.
