    Tavčar, Rok, 1964- ...
Objective: Violence in psychiatry is rare, but causes enormous emotional response in patients, staff and general public. This matter is not included inhealth legislation in Slovenia and should be ... regulated with national guidelines. Method: In October 2000 Expert Committee for preparation of guidelines for management of violent patients in psychiatric hospitals was nominated by Slovenian Board of Psychiatry. Results: After 5 consensus meetings the final guidelines were accepted in May 2001. Interventions are classified in two groups: medicamentous and others. Indications, requirements, precautions and standards of interventions are stated. Classical antipsychotics can still be used for sedation, but the use of atypical agents is encouraged, usually with addition of a benzodiazepine. Various forms of seclusion and restraint are discussed in detail. Permanent staff education, quality assurance and documentation of all procedures is required. Conclusion:These are one of first guidelines on management of violence in psychiatry in Central Europe.
