  • The role of mentoring in the education of prospective classroom teachers
Herzog, Jerneja ; Duh, Matjaž ; Batič, Janja
Well trained and competent teachers play an important role in the formation of the future of our learning society. During their studies, prospective teachers should gain practical experiences in ... addition to generic and specific subject-related competences. The practical experiences can be achieved through subject didactics and practical training under the guidance of teachers-mentors. The purpose of this research was to determine how teachers-mentors of art plan, execute and evaluate a lesson run by a student. We looked into details as to whether the students in question considered didactic principles, how their art tasks were formed and what training and education' strategies they used. The research group were classroom teachers (n=110). who acted as mentors to students while they were doing their compulsory practical training in 2007/2008 school year. The results showed that there is reason for concern as regards the current state of primary school mentors. Hence they should brush up their art-related professional and pedagogical knowledge through lifelong education.
