  • Taxonomic study of morphospecies in the subfamily Arvicolinae Gray, 1821 in Iran; molecular and morphometric approaches : doktorska disertacija
    Mahmoudi, Ahmad
Arvicolinae is one of the most specious groups of rodents consisting of about 151 species in 28 genera and restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. High species richness is supposedly a consequence of ... a rapid evolution of the genome, which was accelerated by colonization of unsettled habitats of vast Holarctic region under ecological opportunity model. Although, Iranian plateau is located on a periphery of the geographical distribution range of arvicolines, a high number of species was recognized for the country. Therefore, arvicoline rodents with 16 recognized species appear to be one of the richest groups of rodents in Iran. In a present study, a broad sampling of arvicolines was carried out in Iran in order to explore their diversity, taxonomy and evolutionary history. Altogether, 20 significant evolutionary units (ESUs) were identified for arvicolines in Iran, of which the genus Microtus emerged as by far the most diverse taxonomic entity encompassing 13 ESUs. These findings retrieved south-west Asia as a cradle for Microtus voles. Based on the molecular clock results, major divergences relate to the climatic oscillations during the Quaternary period. These evolutionary divergences were facilitated by the diverse topography of the Iranian Plateau. The earliest diversification within water voles Arvicola seemingly happened in the Middle East. The number of species in Arvicola is raised up to five. These results, along with sub-structuring of Chionomys nivalis along its southern border, clearly point on a major speciation trap for arvicolines in south-west Asia. Molecular and morphometric divergences among species do not accord clearly pointing on their different rate and mode of evolution. Despite this there are good reasons for combining molecular trees with dendrograms based on morphometric divergences, since such an approach allows an insight into phenotypical evolution.
