    Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common childhood chronic systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease. Better classification criteria and advances in knowledge of the aetiopathogenesis ... and physiology of the disease open up new possibilities for the treatment of JIA. Early diagnosis and correct, aggressive treatment of patients with bad prognostic indicators improve both the patient's quality of life and the final disease outcome. Apart from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, methotrexate remains the mainstay in the treatment of JIA. Despite this, one third of patients do not respond favourably to treatment with methotrexate. For these patients, new possibilities for treatment with so-called bio drugs, such as tumour necrotizing factor alpha blockers are opening up.
