  • Ice load - reason for disasters on overead lines in Slovenia - Yugoslavia
    Zadnik, Branko ...
The additional loads caused by snow, ice and wind are taken into consideration in the concept of overhead lines design in Yugoslavia. Experience gained by analizing the behaviour of overhead lines ... during operation, indicates that quite a lot can be learnt by observing the nature. In the early eighties, an ice load of catastrophic intensity occured in the north-eastern part of our country. It caused damage to parts of HV transmission network of all voltage levels, including 400 kV. It has been established that such catastrophic icing relatively seldom occurs in our county. This paper describes the reasons for the occurrence of icing and its consequences. Under specific weather conditions, a suitable landscape configuration and air temperature, ice load appears on the cooled off earth surface and objects. In our country this phenomenon most frequently occurs at the transition from the mediterranean into the continental climate. The paper shows the data gathered on particular damaged overhead lines, the basic mechanism of the loads which had caused the demolition, as well as the mechanism of damage sequences on overhead line. Our approach to the reconstruction of damaged overhead lines is also presented.
