  • Land use and landscape preservation with cattle on mountain pastures of the Tolminsko region in Slovenia
    Osterc, Jože ...
The western and central parts of Slovenia lie between the Mediterranean and Karst region on the one side and the Alpine region on the other. About 32% of Slovenia belongs to the Dinaric-Karst and ... sub-Mediterranean region, while 43% to the pre-alpine and alpine region. In Tolminsko, where the influence of the Mediterranean climate can be felt in the valley of the Soca river, cattle breeding on a mountain pasture was developed along with cheese production during the summer. Such a system of animal breeding enabled small farms to rear more cattle. Due to a more favourable climate, pasture can last about 125days whereas in other alpine regions it lasts only 100 days. In 1960, pasture in woods and grazing by cattle on mountain pastures was forbidden by law. After 1980, the government realised the economic and cultural significance of mountain pastures. Subsidies were awarded for the use of mountain pastures. In 1991, about 900 cows and about 1000 young grazed on mountain pastures of the Tolminsko region and over 700 000 kg of milk were produced, producing 50 000 kg cheese and 28 000 kg curd. Brown breed cows are reared in this region now. A recorded cow produced almost 5 200 kg milk last year in the standard lactation. In this region, seasonal mating is applied so that cows calve after their return from the mountain. Cows live on the mountain pastures from the middle of May till the middle of September where they dry after going to the mountain pasture in the last stage of lactation.
