  • Did neoliberal capitalism contribute to the democratic recession? Panel regression evidence from a sample of 141 countries, 2006–2017 [Elektronski vir]
    Rutar, Tibor
As the world was economically opening up and transitioning more and more to capitalism in the final decades of the previous century, especially after 1989/91, the number and quality of democratic ... countries also rose precipitously; democracies more than doubled between 1980 and 2006. Capitalist economic freedom went hand-in-hand with democratic political freedom. But with the emergence of the democratic recession in 2006, it seems that the relationship has now changed. The world is becoming more capitalist every year (as shown by indexes of economic freedom) while democracy is faltering. Is neoliberalism nowadays negatively tied to democracy? This paper uses panel data for 141 developed and developing countries to analyse the relationship between economic freedom and democracy in the period 2006–2017. Various statistical comparisons reveal that the relationship is either positive or neutral, but not negative, at the aggregate level. The critical hypothesis that neoliberalism has contributed to the democratic recession is thus far not well corroborated.
