  • Mercury pollution in Trieste Bay
    Horvat, Milena, 1958- ...
Trieste Bay (NW Adriatic, Mediterranean Sea) is subject to considerable Hg pollution, mainly originating from Isonzo River which drains the cinnabar deposits of the world' second largest Hg mining ... area (Idrija in Slovenia). The Hg mine was operational for over 500 years and has gradually been closed over the 10 years. This paper presents data from the first year of a long-term study which aims to assess to extent of contamination in the bay after the closure of the Hg mine and to predict the fate of Hg stored in the bottom sediment. Sampling was performed twice during 1995, in June (high river inflow, productive period) and in September (low river inflow, stratified conditions and occasional anoxic conditions at the bottom). It can be concluded that even through the Hg mine closed down completely in 1991, Hg concentrations in river sediments and water are still very high and did not show the expected decrease of Hg in Trieste Bay.
