    Background Breast-feeding is related to various etiologic factors for dental diseases and malocclusions. With a questionnaire-based study we wanted to assess expectant parentš knowledge about some ... factors, important for prevention in dentistry, which are directly or indirectly related to breast-feeding lhrough their influence on oral health of children. Methods Multiple-choice questions in Questionnaire 1 were answered by 807 participantsof parenting classes (553 women and 254 men) before the lecture onoral health care. Seven to fourteen days afterthe lecture Questionnaire 2 was completed by 575 expectant parents (413 women and 162 men). The association of different factors with co ectness of answers was assessed by multivariate logistic regression models. Correctness of answers before and after the lecture was also compared. Results Before dental health education, 99.8% of expectant parents were aware of the importance of breast-milk and 95.3% of them knew cariogenic potential of sweet meals. Their knowledge on different properties of food as factors in etiology of dental caries was statistically significantly related to educational level. After the lecture, 96.9% of participants recognized sweet fluids given in a nursing bottle as an important cause of rapid development of dental caries. That dental plaque consists of numerous bacteria was known to 82.8% of respondents before the lecture and to 91.5% after the lecture; that tooth brushing should start as soon as the first primary teeth erupt was known to 81.8% and to 95,5%, respectively. Awareness of anticariogenic effect of fluorides was present in 83.4% of expectant parents before the lecture; it was significantly related toeducational Ievel; after the lecture, it was present in 96.7%.
