  • Irreversible ion exchange in deep liquid fluidized beds and in series of shallow liquid fluidized beds
    Koloini, Tine, 1940-2008 ; Žumer, Miha, 1937-2013
An empirical rate expression was used to describe the local rate of irreversible ion exchange between dilute solution of hydrochloric acid and fluidized resin Amberlite IRA-425. Combining this rate ... expression with different mixing patterns for solid and liquid phases, three different models of ion exchange were obtained. The experimental data obtained in series of shallow fluidized beds and in liquid fluidized beds were compared with the prediction of three models. A good agreement between the experimental and predicted break-through curves was found in the case of series of shallow liquid fluidized beds, if a model which assumes plug flow through solid mixing stages, and also a model which assumes a flow pattern which deviates to some extent from plug flow, was used. The model for a series of solid mixing stages with the same number of liquid mixing stages was found inadequate at the conditions of the experiments described in this work. The fit between the experimental and calculated results is not good in deep beds as in series o shallow beds, since all three models used predict a stagewise change of concentration with time, a feature which is not observed in deep beds. However, the model can be used successfully to predict the general features of the break-through curves in this case. The differences between the prdiction of the three models disappear to considerable extent if the result are plotted in the form ▫$C/C_F vs. t on arithmetic coordinates , which can lead to erroneouss conclusions about the suitability of different models. This may be one of the reason why a model consisting of a series of mixing stages in liquid phase was used by several authors in modeling ion exchange in fluidized beds. The other reason why this model was found suitable is the fact that the rate expression was back-calculated from the experimental data on the assumption that this model applies.$▫
