  • Wastewater pollution on the territory of Međimurje county [Elektronski vir]
Zeman, Silvija ; Srpak, Melita ; Vovk, Ana
Rising energy consumption, the usage of fossil fuels, urbanisation, industrialisation and intensive agriculture are leading to ever increasing global water demand. These actions, however, ... consequently lead to the increase of surface and deep water source pollution. The aim of this paper is founded upon the the protection of exactly those water sources, which represent the highest priority for public health and ecosystems’ preservation. The paper demonstrates that the protection is achieved through the processes of wastewater treatment before their discharge as well as through rigorous control over the entire sewage system. Međimurje recognises the importance of this resource as it is a region rich in high quality underground drinking water. Drinking water, as one of the cardinal natural treasures that we own and use, requires constant protection and maintenance. Public water distribution system of Međimurje covers the entirety of the region, supplying around 34 thousand households and around 2500 legal entities. Prelog plant, responsible for water supply of the town of Prelog and the surrounding lower Međimurje region with drinkable water, is only one of many vital parts of the entire network. Eco-remediation systems play a key role in maintaining water quality, enabling complete use of all elements in traces, nutrients and energy concentrated in wastewater and organic trash sourced from households. This paper conducts research on wastewater sampling and sample analysis of the public water supply system discharge in compliance with local water management permits. Measuring parameters include total oils and fats concentration, chemical oxygen demand – cromium reduction method (COD Cr), detergents, total suspended particle, Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), pH, and sedimented particle. These parameters generate a comprehensive overview of the water quality, by a precise measurement and control over the purification process.
