  • Epidemiološki podatki o raku materničnega vratu v Sloveniji = Epidemiologic data on cancer of the cervix uteri in Slovenia
    Primic-Žakelj, Maja ; Zadnik, Vesna, 1975- ; Žagar, Tina, 1979-
In 2002, the uterine cervix was the sixth most frequent cancer site in females. In young women aged 20-34, however, it was the leading cancer site. The incidence rate of cervical cancer (CC) started ... to increase in the nineties, so the organised screening program ZORA was introduced. The epidemiology of CC in the 1990-2003 period is presented, based on data from the Cancer Registry of Slovenia. In the nineties, the CC incidence rate increased from 15.9/100,000 in 1990 (164 new cases) to 23, 6/100,000 (241 new cases) in 1997, from 1998-2001 it was about 20/100,000, since then the trend decreased, also in the 35-44 years age group. Among the histological groups, squamous cell carcinoma showed the highest increase while a slight increase inother histological groups can be ascribed to a decrease in the unspecified group. The percentage of adenocarcinomas increased principally among the youngest. The percentage of localised disease increased throughout the observed period; in the age group of 20-34 it reached 85 % in 2001-2003. In the last period only in this age group more than half were diagnosed as FIGO stage IA, while in others stage IB prevailed. The epidemiologic data on CC show the effect of the organised screening program ZORA, but the incidence is expected to increase further in those regions where more women who have not been screened for several years will attend the preventive examination.
