    The intermontane Pliocene-Quaternary Velenje basin, Slovenia, is bounded by the Periadriatic Line to the north and by the Šoštanj fault system to the southwest. The basin filling is up to 1.000 m ... thick and shows a typical continental sequence ranging from terrestrial to lacustrine clastic sediments.It contains a 160-m-thick lignite seam. Structurally, the basin resembles a half graben. The southwestern basin margin is strongly vertically segmented by the faults of the Šoštanj fault system. The fault architecture, arrangement and geometry of minor tectonic blocks indicate that the origin of structures is related to transtensional dextral movements along overstepping segment of the Šoštanj fault zone. The syn- and postsedimentary activity of the Šoštanj fault and the sealing of the adjacent Velenje fault by basin sediments contribute valuable data on the timing of the latest stages of the evolution of the Periadriatic and related fault systems.
