  • Long-term technical monitoring of the Mavčiče concrete gravity dam

    The Mavčiče concrete gravity dam, part of the corresponding hydro-power plant on the Sava River, in Slovenia, was built in 1986. Its structural height is 38.5 m, and the dam crest has a length of 149 ... m. A long-term manual technical monitoring system of the static behaviour of the dam was established in 1986 and upgraded in 2003, with automated measurements of several parameters. In 2005 an automated monitoring system for studying the dynamic behaviour of the dam was established. Although the results of measurements and visual inspections do not, in general, show any abnormalities, the results of measurements of vertical displacements of the erection bay, on top of the backfilled right bank of the dam, initially showed increasing settlements which were the consequence of secondary consolidation of this backfill, together with its probable internal erosion. By 1999 these settlements amounted to 19 - 22 mm. Due to resulting differential settlements, one crane line which connects the erection bay to the machine hall, as well as the craneline which is located on the crest of the dam, became nonfunctional, and needed height corrections. After rehabilitation works of the backfill and substratum of the right bank of the dam had been performed, in 1999-2000, it was observed that the settlement rate had slowed down significantly.
