  • The art of blinding in human physiological research : unmasking the hidden hero in scientific inquiry
    Narang, Benjamin J.
Blinding, a key concept in research methodology, involves withholding certain information from participants or researchers involved in a study to minimise bias. Bias can arise from human tendencies ... to hold preconceived notions and exhibit behaviours that align with those beliefs. This phenomenon underscores the importance of blinding across various physiological contexts. Scientists go to great lengths to control for extraneous variables within a study design. Indeed, experimental controls often require more planning in relation to study design than the appropriate administration of the independent variable itself. However, despite the potential confounding role of intervention awareness, comparatively less consideration or creativity may be given to facilitating and validating blinding within a study. Several studies may therefore benefit from a more nuanced consideration of blinding strategies, particularly if an independent variable is difficult to conceal in relation to its respective control condition.
