  • Long-term effects of electrical stimulation on parameters of postocclusive reactive hyperemia in patients with peripheral vascular disease
    Kragelj, Rudi ...
A clinical study was conducted to examine the effects of electrical stimulation on the parameters of blood perfusion and tissue oxygenation in patients with peripheral vascular disease. Electrical ... stimulation was applied through electrodes placed on gastrocnemious muscle and on the dorsal side of the foot for 90 minutes per day in four consecutive weeks. A total of 17 patients with peripheral vascular disease (Fontain II) were assigned into control and treatment group. The effects of electrical stimulation were determined by analyzing the changes of parameters of postocclared spectroscopyand transcutaneous oximetry. Time domain parameters of reactive hyperemia (time of recovery and time to peak value of NIRS signals, and the half time of the response of the Tcp02 signal), rate of reactive hyperemia (relative HR and absolute deltaChip change of the NIRS signal) and the absolute TcpO2 values were compared during the four weeks of therapy. The changes of the measured PORH parameters in the treatment group during the fourweeks of the applied therapy were not significantly different. The observed changes during this period can not be attributed to the influence of the electrical stimulation on the peripheral vasculature. The design of the study should be studied completely regarding the number and levels of vasculardisorders in patients, amplitude of the stimulation, positioning of the electrodes, and the period of the therapy.
