  • Molecular diagnostics of emerging infectious disease = Molekularna diagnostika porajajočih se in nevarnih mikroorganizmov
    Duh, Darja ; Avšič-Županc, Tatjana
Infectious diseases are today a leading cause of death worldwide, with continously increasing mortality. Over the past few years. increasing concern and attention have been directed at the problems ... and issues associated with emerging and reemerging diseases. Emerging infectious diseases can be defined as the infections that have newly appeared in the population or have existed, but are rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range. Re-emerging diseases encompass the diseases whose causative agents appeared randomly, after many years of absence in the areas where they had been reported before. but are rapidly increasing through reduced vaccine coverage or through gainingresistance to antibiotics. The emergening infectious diseases require asophisticated surveillance with clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiological components on an international scale. In the present paper we will review the examples of detection and diagnosis of emerging infectious diseases using various molecular techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), reversetranscription PCR, real time PCR, sequencing and reverse genetics.
