    Iron is a critical element for all living organisms and is essential for many chemical processes in the body. The total iron content of healthy humans is about 3-4g. It is distributed in three ... different compartments. 9f this mostly is contained in vital proteins such as hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytocromes and other enzymes as active form of iron. Next is storage compartment and the lastone is transport iron, bound to transferrin. There are many pathological states that may lead to iron deficiency and in some rare cases also to iron overload. Both, iron deficiency and iron overload, are harmful for the body, need fast diagnosis and treatment. Most frequently, iron status is measured byserum iron concentration, serum transferin saturation and serum ferritin. There are also some new parameters such as the percentage of hypochromic red cells, reticulocyte hemoglobin content, transferrin receptors expression and some others. No single measurement is ideal for all clinical circumstances, asall are affected by confounding factors.
