Ražem, Astrid ; Žvan, Bojana ; Grošelj, Dušan
Background: Infection is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Periodontal disease, owing to its high prevalence, may represent a significant fraction ofinfection-related risk for the development of ... atherosclerosis and its complications, such as myocardial infarction and ischaemic stroke. Patients and methods: Clinical periodontal data were collected from 30 patients undergoing ultrasound examination of carotid arteries at the Department of Neurology, University Medical Centre Ljubljana. Pearson's coefficient of correlation was calculated for several pairs of periodontal and carotid arteryparameters. Results: Intimamedia thickness in the carotid bulb was significantly greater in patients with lipid and calcified atherosclerotic plaques, compared with the control group. In the common carotid artery, intima-media thickness was significantly greater only in patients with calcified atherosclerotic plaques, compared with the control group. Periodontal pocket depth was significantly correlated with intima-media thickness at the carotid bifurcation and in the common carotid artery as well as with type of atherosclerotic plaque. Conclusions: Our preliminary results suggest that periodontitis may play a role in atheroma formation. Further studies are necessary to elucidate mechanisms linking periodontal infection with atherogenesis.
