  • Practical design of masonry subjected to horizontal loads based on Eurocode 6 shear model [Elektronski vir]

    It appears that some practicing engineers find the Eurocode 6 equations for shear design of unreinforced masonry confusing because the shear resistance appears to be a function of the horizontal ... load, which is counterintuitive. The reason for this is that the shear resistance is expressed as a function of the compressed length which is itself a function of applied horizontal load. In the paper a detailed analysis of the equations is presented which shows that equations can be rewritten in such a way that ultimate shear resistance is not a function of horizontal load. Additionally, the modification makes it very simple to calculate compression-shear interaction diagrams which include also compression failure due to bending. From these interaction diagrams one can directly see how shear resistance and failure mechanism are influenced by material properties, wall geometry and vertical load. With the new tool, an analysis of the accuracy of the model is performed by comparing it to experimental results of long and short walls at different levels of compressive (vertical) load. The use of interaction diagrams makes it possible to also qualitatively assess how well the Eurocode 6 model matches with reality.
