  • Modelling of mercury cycling in Trieste bay (Northern Adriatic)
    Širca, Andrej ...
Mercury pollution of Trieste bay originates mainly from the mining area of Idrija (Slovenia) from which mercury-rich river sediments were carried to Trieste bay by the Idrijca and Soča rivers during ... a 500-year period of mercury ore exploitation. Recent measurements of different authors showed high mercury contents in sediments and suspended matter in the bay which were even two orders of magnitude greater than the correspondending natural background values from Central and Southern Adriatic. The reported values of dissolved mercury were usually only slightly above the natural background. Since ocasional higher concentrations of mercury in fish can be observed, concern exists that the developing eutrophication of the bay may lead to more frequent anoxia, production of methylmercury (MeHg) and its accumulation in fish. In present form, the model gives a spatial distribution of HgII and MeHgin water (dissolved, particulate, plankton) as it is established by Soča's discharge, sea currents and abovementioned mercury process. In our paper, results of the model will be discussed and compared to some recent measurements in the bay. Due to the utmost importance of sedimentation as the major mercury sink, an interactive SST model, devloped at the University of Ljubljana will be applied in 1996 instead of the MIKE 2 MT. Thereby, a firm basis shall be formed for a future fish model which is the final aim of this study.
