  • Cnidarian toxins acting on the cholinergic system
    Bulc Rozman, Klara ...
Cnidarian toxins, especially toxins from corals, comprise a great number of diverse substances including proteins and secondary metabolites. Only a small portion of those substances has been ... pharmacologically well characterized and, despite the richness and diversity of cnidarian toxins, only a few studieshave been dealing with those acting on the cholinergic system. Here, wedescribe cnidarian toxins acting on acetylcholine receptors, acetylcholinesterase and choline acetyltransferase. The search in the literature revealed no report on cnidarian toxins acting directly on vesiculartransport or exocytosis of acetylcholine, except for some toxins thatact either on K+ current or intracellular Ca2+ activity in nerve terminals, which is beyond the scope of this review. The possible use of cnidarian toxins acting on the cholinergic system in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders is also described.
