  • Fracture mechanics characteristics of M-2 type high speed steel = Lomno mehanske značilnosti hitroreznega jekla vrste M-2
    Pluvinage, Guy ...
The aim of the proposed contribution is to present the investigations made in the frame of project entitled: Determination of notch fracture toughness of tool steels under the patronage of ... Slovenian-France bilateral scientific cooperation named Proteus. A determination of fracture toughness with two different non-standardised methods will be presented. First method deals with so-called determination of notch stress intensity factor K[sub](p,c) on the specimens without fatigue crack but with different notch radii. The second one is a method of determination of fracture toughness K[sub](IC) on the cylindrical samples with V notch and fatigue crack. For our investigations andexperiments very hard, high-strength and brittle, M-2 type high-speed steel was selected. It behaves during loading a completely linear-elastic to the fracture. Introductory, volumetric approach will be presented, where it is assumed that materials fracture starts and continue, if appropriately large physical volume is on a disposal and that this volume is loaded by the certain average equilibrium stress. The basis for the determination of effective volume, distance end stress is numerical calculation based on a finite element method (FEM). The results of FEM calculations will be presented and discussed. Experimental procedures and results of both methods will be also presented. A comparison of both methods will be supported by the microstructural and fractographic examinations.
