  • IT outsourcing relationship model
Zebec Koren, Marko ; Mesner-Andolšek, Dana
In the last two decades outsourcing experienced a boost (Hirschheim & Lacity, 2000; Lacity & Willcocks, 2001) and this trend is still evident despite the economic crisis. Focus of this paper is on ... the study of information technology outsourcing relationship (Gulati & Singh, 1998; Henderson, 1990; Parkhe, 1993). We studied the nature of the relationship between partners in outsourcing where we assume that in outsourcing the contractual parties exceedthe transactional nature of the relationship and form alliances (McFarlan & Nolan, 1995) or partnerships (Ellram & Birou, 1995; Henderson, 1990; La Londe & Cooper, 1989; Powell, 1990). We built our own holistic research model of relationship in IT outsourcing, including seven independent variables (resolving conflicts, communication, dependency, power, personal bonds, matching of organizational cultures and commitment) and two medating variables: trust and satisfaction (Goles, 2001; Goles & Chin, 2002; Kern, 1997; Lee & Kim, 1999; Kern & Willcocks, 2000, 2001, 2002). Data was used for testing structural equations model of relationship in IT outsourcing. Our quantitative research involved 70 large Slovenian companies. The results have shown that the matching organizational cultures and commitment to the relationship have the biggest positive influence on the level of trust. Influence of other independent variables was merely indicative. Model modification process suggested two additional relations: Matching the organizational cultures considerably influences the satisfaction with IT outsourcing and the communication in the relationship has a direct and strong influence on the success of IT outsourcing. This finding is supported by all three basic theories: transaction costs theory (Williamson, 1975, 1979 1985; Mintzberg, 1983), agency theory (Jensen & Meckling, 1976) and relational exchange theory (Macneil, 1980)
