  • Influence of supercritical fluids on the structure of poly(ethylene terephtalate) fibres : thesis submitted to the Natural Science Faculty of the Karl-Franzens- University for the requirement of the degree of Doctor of Natural Science
    Sfiligoj-Smole, Majda
Highly oriented semicrystalline unmodified poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET) fibres were exposed under various conditions to the supercritical CO2 fluid and the effect of the treatment conditions on ... the structure and on the extent of structural changes was followed by various techniques of small and wide-angle x-ray analysis, infrared spectroscopy and density measurements, calorimetric and scanning electron microscopy analysis and the detremination of mechanical properties. The effects of the supercritical fluid (SCF) treatment were compared to the effects observed after heating the fibres in water and dry air, resperctively. The reslts of the studies suggest that the crystalline regions are increased, while remaining oriented. The main parameter effecting the changes in the crystalline structure is the temperature, while the medium used shows less influence. The observed structural changes were additionally conditioned by the highly microfibrillar structure of the PET samples. Different treatment conditions show little difference with respect to the observed increase in crystallinity parameter. The thermal stability of the samples increases by the treatment. The surface morphology of the fibres is remarkably changed after the dyeing process. SCF treatment causes oligomer migration from the inner part of the fibre to the fibre surface. The results clearly reflect the changes of the inner surface with the blind SFC dyeing. The SFC causes dispersion of voids in smaller voids and the formation of new ones. The observed changes of the macrovoid system are caused by the migration of oligomers from the inner part of the fibre to the surface. The dying conditions are probably too mild to cause more extensive changes in fibre suprastructure. The changes do not reach such an extent as to influence the mechanical properties of fibres.
